What is the Buroku Real Food Buyers' Club? The word Buroku means Beat in Lithuanian. If you know anything about Lithuanians, you know that they like to eat well. We started out as a low income, family based group of recovering junk food addicts, that wanted to buy real food, without paying the high costs in retail outlets. Georgie a founding member of Junk Food Anonymous was getting all kinds of e-mail with the same question: "...now that we have removed the junk food from our shelves, they are empty. When we go grocery shopping we cannot find anything that is not adulterated... where can we find real food to eat?..." So we learned to make our own delicious, chunky, organic nut butters and sprouted grain breads, pies made from organic apples, from whole grains and without sucrose or sodium chloride and so on. Soon the word got out and a few students needed access to minimally packaged organic products (not just food! Think….toilet paper and soap), members of Buroku can purchase items directly from our organic distributors. Through this cooperative buying effort, organic products are made both more affordable and more accessible to students and community members. If you are an economy conscious consumer, this is an opportunity to purchase wonderful organic and regular food, produce and products without the associated high cost. The average retailer adds a 25% to 30% mark up...we add only 12% to cover the cost of maintenance, but we also buy at 15% to 20% reduced wholesale costs. The cost is smaller, but the nutritional properties are the highest possible and the taste of the food is top gourmet quality. Why not eat well, have fun and save your money? You can also post collective buying suggestions on the buying club online e-mail forum…maybe someone one else shares your love of nutritional yeast!? How to Join? Just complete the donation form available on VirtualFreeU.com or AdBan.org using the word "Buroku" with a 2$ donation and you are in. To become a VFU member of Buroku Buyers’ Club we suggest that you donate a registration fee of $22 per year on the Virtual Free University site that is hosting the Buroku Buyers webpage. This also offsets our cost of publishing on the Internet and entitles you also to receive a subscription to the interactive study forum for Peace Makers. How can we eat well, without peace!? We do have few membership guidelines that we require. We use the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of A.A. as an organizational model and so we require that you must be clean and saber for at least 90 days before you can get involved with the administrative process. This would also apply In the case of those who are recovering anti-nutrients addicts. We advocate zero tolerance on synthetic and refined foods i.e.: sucrose, sodium chloride, refined flour, caffeine etc. and we avoid advertising as much as possible ...So if you like to pay the extra costs for fancy labels and pretty packages then this is not for you. We also expect that members will participate in the process by volunteering some time and energy...many hands make light work and also lower costs for all. If you are having a hard time making ends meet, we are open to barter and trade for products and services, but please remember this is a members owned buyers club and we are only able to operate, if there is mutual aid. We are small at present, so do not expect that you will receive any "sit back and watch" push button automatic service. Think of yourself as a guest in an Ashram ...Sometimes offering to help is appropriate. We are about 98% vegetarian, we do not purchase meats or dairy that is not organic or range feed and preferably completely from the wild ...For example we know some native people in North Ontario that prepare smoked lake fish without any salt. It is expensive, but you will not find anything like it in supermarkets anywhere. It is the real thing. We have flexible hours, by appointment only and prefer to do business during the week day from 10AM to 6PM Buroku has relationships with two major organic distributors: Pro Organics, Oak Manor Farms and by way of a special arrangement with the Cathy Food Market, we can order directly, anything available at the Ontario Food Terminal. We also receive an updated produce list from our distributors, which members receive on request. We place an order monthly with your requests added. Let us know what you need now and eat well.
